Meet John Over – McKenzie River Fishing Guide
As a lifelong McKenzie River fisherman based in Eugene, Oregon, I’ve spent years exploring the waters just beyond my backyard. My passion for fly fishing and boating eventually led me to create Over the River Guide Service, which I proudly own and operate today.
Guiding clients down the historic McKenzie River—chasing native trout and sharing the beauty of this incredible place—is one of my greatest joys. Whether you’re a beginner or an experienced angler, I apply my years of local river knowledge and fly fishing experience to create a successful and memorable day on the water.
When I’m not guiding, I work as a clinical researcher at Slocum Orthopedics here in Eugene, while also pursuing a path toward medical school with the goal of becoming an orthopedic surgeon. Outside of work, I love to stay active—whether it’s kayaking, hiking, camping, working out, or simply spending time outdoors.
Certified Oregon Fishing Guide with Local Expertise
I am an Oregon State Marine Board-Certified professional fly fishing guide, CPR and First Aid certified, and a proud member of the McKenzie River Guides Association, which has been in operation since 1931.
As a trusted figure in the local fishing community, I’ve built relationships with respected brands and organizations in Oregon’s outdoor scene—further proof of my commitment to providing a high-quality, safe, and authentic McKenzie River fishing experience.

Partnerships
My most recent partnership involves being named the official guide partner of the Irish Fishing Club. The club was started by Eugene native and Chargers quarterback, Justin Herbert. The club has since evolved into a nonprofit with a mission of, “creating opportunities for the next generation to develop community, camaraderie, and character.” My leadership position within the baseball and fishing community has allowed me to provide the same opportunities for the youth that I was blessed with growing up. By donating fishing trips, I aim to introduce kids to the outdoors and to spread my passion to the next generation of fishermen.
